During her visit near the Mahul drain, opposite Vasantdada College, the Mayor highlighted that the area falls under Zone 5 of the civic administration, where extensive desilting operations are required. She revealed that a target of approximately 3,364 kilo metric tonnes of silt removal had been set for this location. However, the contractor failed to commence work on schedule, resulting in only 869 metric tonnes of silt being cleared so far—significantly below the निर्धारित target.
Expressing strong dissatisfaction over the slow pace of progress, Tawde instructed concerned officials and the contractor to expedite the work immediately. She underscored that completing the cleaning of all drains before the onset of the monsoon is essential to prevent waterlogging across the city.
Every year, several parts of Mumbai face severe disruption due to water accumulation during heavy rainfall. In response, the civic administration is exercising heightened vigilance this year to mitigate such risks.
In a parallel move to enhance transparency, the municipal corporation has introduced a new initiative involving the installation of digital dashboards at desilting sites. These dashboards will provide real-time data on the volume of silt removed and the status of ongoing work. The system aims to simplify monitoring and curb irregularities in execution.
The Mayor expressed confidence that all desilting operations would be completed within the stipulated deadline, offering substantial relief to residents from recurring waterlogging issues during the rainy season. The intensified push reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening urban resilience ahead of the monsoon.
